ACT-SO
ACT-SO--the Afro-Academic, Cultural,
Technological and Scientific Olympics--is a major youth initiative of the
NAACP. ACT-SO is a yearlong enrichment program
designed to recruit, stimulate, improve and encourage high academic and
cultural achievement among African American high school students. Gold
medalists at the local level qualify for the national finals held each summer.

Talent in the Arts Category: Your high school can nominate five juniors for an
audition in visual art, instrumental music, vocal music, dance, or drama.
Officially designated magnet schools for the arts may each nominate 10 juniors.
In early June, nominated students must appear in person for an audition or
portfolio review before a panel of professional judges.

Academic Achievement Category: Applicants must have earned a minimum,
cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale in academic subjects
taken during their first five semesters of high school. The applicant’s highest
SAT 1 scores from tests taken in January of the junior year or earlier are used
with the GPA to determine final eligibility. PSAT or ACT scores will be
considered only if the student has not taken the SAT 1.

AEMS and Kennedy Center Awards
This Award program is presented to individual schools that have arts
education programs. Recipients of the Maryland State Award are chosen by the Arts
Education in Maryland Schools Alliance (AEMS) Awards Committee. Selected
schools are honored during the AEMS Alliance Cultural Arts for
Education Conference. Schools meeting additional national level criteria
may be nominated for the National Schools of Distinction Award.

Foundation Writing Contest
The Jack London Foundation encourages high school
students to explore the spirit of Jack London through reading and participation
in the Writing Contest. The writing contest is open to all students in grades 9
through 12. The essays or stories can be on any subject. The entries are judged
on content and form, with an emphasis on creativity.

The Coca−Cola Scholars Foundation supports over
1,400 college students each year, with annual scholarships of $3.4 million
through two nationally recognized programs on behalf of the Coca−Cola

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic
competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. Entry is by

NFAA youngARTS
For more than 25 years, the National Foundation for
Advancement in the Arts (NFAA) has been dedicated to nurturing and supporting
young artists as they pursue their dreams. youngARTS evaluates students against
a standard of excellence for their discipline and age. Approximately 10 percent of the 6-8,000 annual applicants
receive scholarships and awards. Of those, up to 150 students are chosen to
participate in youngARTS Week, during which they are brought to Miami for an
all-expenses-paid week of master classes, showcase performances, exhibitions,
interdisciplinary activities, enrichment programs, interviews, and the final
auditions. NFAA is the exclusive
nominating agency for the Presidential Scholars in the Arts.

AP Scholar Awards
The AP Program offers several AP Scholar Awards to
recognize high school students who have demonstrated college-level achievement
through AP courses and exams. AP Scholars are students who receive grades of 3
or higher on three or more AP Exams. AP Scholar with Honors received an average
grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades
of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. AP Scholars with Distinction
received an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on
five or more of these exams.

National Pro-Start
Student Invitational
The National ProStart Invitational is composed of two
distinct competitions: the culinary and management competitions. First through
fifth place winning teams from each of the two events are awarded medals and
scholarships to pursue a career in the restaurant and foodservice industry. Teams
participating in the management competition demonstrate their knowledge of
the restaurant and foodservice industry by competing in two different events.
In the Case Study, students are tested on their communication skills and their
ability to apply their knowledge of the restaurant and foodservice industry to
practical situations. The second portion of the competition, the Quiz Bowl, is
a question and answer “Jeopardy” style event.

Presidential Scholar
in the Arts
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established
in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of
our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the
program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent
in the visual, creative and performing arts. Each year, up to 141 students are
named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high
school students.
