LEDA Scholars Program

CATEGORY – Leadership

GRADE - 11

Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA) is looking for its next cohort of 100 LEDA Scholars.  Participants take part in leadership development programs and also receive support from LEDA’s College Success Team.  The deadline to apply is December 11th.  To learn more visit LEDA Scholars.  To apply, please complete the online application.

 

The NEW PSAT

CATEGORY – Testing

GRADE - 9, 10 & 11

Students in grades 9-11 will be taking the PSAT on October 14th.  Students and families can learn  more about how to prepare for the new PSAT through the College Board's Prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT booklet.

 

 

Parallel Enrollment through TOWSON University – Take College Courses in High School

CATEGORY – Early College Access

GRADE – 10 & 11 (9th grades please take note to plan ahead for next year)

Many students are aware that they can take courses through the Community College of Baltimore County for either half price (Parallel Enrollment) or Tuition Fully Paid (College 4 Free – families pay for books and fees).  But you should also know that high school students can take courses at Towson University using Parallel Enrollment.  Baltimore County students who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and an SAT score of 500 in all three sections (or a PSAT of 50 on all three sections) can qualify for Parallel Enrollment through Towson University.  Interested students can visit the School Counseling Office to pick up the Towson Parallel Enrollment Application.

 

The Maryland Zoo – Teen Leaders Institute

GRADE – 11-12

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore will be holding a High School Winder Service Learning Program for 11th and 12thgraders with a passion to make a difference.  This event will be held on Saturdays starting on January 30th 9:00am – 1:00pm.  To apply, visit the Maryland Zoo.  Applications are due by December 12th

 

Jack Kent Cooke Junior Academy

CATEGORY – Leadership

GRADE – 11

With support from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, The New York Academy of Sciences has just launched The Junior Academy.  This online STEM program connects top-performing students with STEM mentors to learn the latest in scientific research and provides opportunities for students to apply their knowledge, creativity, and skills towards real-world challenges.  The program is currently recruiting students through October 15th.  To apply, review the full program details and student application.

Free Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy

CATEGORY – Testing

GRADE 9-12

I know we’ve mentioned this one before, but we can’t say enough about Khan Academy.  It’s a free online resource for students who want or need additional instruction in a variety of areas.  And it is aligned with the redesigned SAT, so you can practice for the test on Khan Academy’s website 

 

4 or More – CollegeBoard’s College Application Campaign

CATEGORY – College Exploration

GRADE – 11-12

Apply to 4 or More is a national movement to help every student identify reach, safety and good fit colleges and universities to which they can apply.  If you are a student interested in finding at least 4 colleges for your application pool, visit Big Future: Applying 101 has more information.

 

Visit CCBC on PSAT Day

CATEGORY – College Exploration

GRADE -12

Students are invited to tour the CCBC Essex campus on Wednesday October 14th.  Tours hosted by Student Ambassadors will be approximately 1 hour in length and will begin at 10:00am, 12:00noon, 1:00pm and 4:00pm.  Call ahead to save you place – 443-840-1377.

 

New Scholarships Open

CATEGORY – Scholarships/Financial Aid

GRADE – 12

We had several students join us yesterday for Scholarship Tuesday in the computer lab.  During that time counselors provided an overview of the tools available to search for scholarships.  We also provided attendees with information about the Elks Scholarship which is currently open.  We now have two additional scholarships to advertise.   Any interested students should plan to visit us next Tuesday for a full presentation.  In the meantime you can visit their websites to learn more:
